Here are some “did you knows” to begin this blog and the new month as well. If you were unaware, the dates for September and December are on the same day of the week every year; this is because there are 91 days between September and December, which is a multiple of seven (the number of days in the week). Also, September is second only to January as a month for setting resolutions. Makes sense if you think about it because September is the time when school starts and it marks the beginning of the academic year.
Consequently, it only makes sense to make resolutions at the start of this month; however, as we are all generally aware resolutions are like good intentions as most quickly die quiet deaths. It does not have to be that way. Numerous studies have shown that it takes roughly three weeks to change or create a new habit. With this in mind, breaking a goal down into short blocks will increase the likelihood of achieving the goal itself.
Despite knowing all of the above, if you are like me you have set numerous goals and have failed miserably in trying to reach many of them. For those of you like me, I offer you this by quote from Thomas Edison in which he said, “I have not failed; I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Too often we view failure as a comment on who we are when in reality it is nothing more than a stage in our development as a person. I have wanted to run an ultramarathon (100 miles) for years, but to date my training has led my body to break down, so I am like Edison in this regard. I just have not yet found what will work, but I will.
What will you do with this new month? Will it be the same as last month or will it mark a date on which you decided to take greater control of your destiny? I believe we have an innate dignity within us all that enables us, as we reach outside ourselves, to become greater than what we are. We have it within ourselves to rise above our circumstances, but the decision to do so rests within us. What will you choose?
